Argentina citizenship by investment: questions answered
The nine things people actually ask.
The nine things people actually ask about this programme, with the legal position as it stands rather than as it is marketed.
Is the Argentina citizenship by investment programme real?
The legal framework is real: it was created by Decrees 366/2025 and 524/2025, an agency exists with an appointed director, and Congress passed a tax carve-out for investor citizens in March 2026. What does not exist yet is an operational programme. The Minister of Economy presented its terms in Paris on 2 October 2026, but no implementing rule, fee schedule or application procedure has been published in the Official Gazette, and the enabling decree was declared null by the National Electoral Chamber on 30 June 2026 and is on appeal.
Can I apply today?
No. There is no application portal, no published procedure, no fee schedule and no published criteria for accrediting agents. Anyone accepting an application or a deposit for this programme today is doing so ahead of any published rule.
When will it launch?
The government is targeting the fourth quarter of 2026, as announced on 2 October. That is a target, not a commitment: the implementing rules have not been published, the operator tender was annulled in April 2026 and the enabling decree is before the Supreme Court.
What will it cost?
USD 350,000 for the main applicant as a non-refundable contribution, or a USD 800,000 government bond in its place. Family members are priced per person on either route: a spouse or a child aged 18 to 25 adds USD 100,000 each, a child under 18 adds USD 25,000 each. Service fees are expected at around 10 per cent and due diligence starts at USD 10,000 per applicant. Government and passport fees have not been indicated, so no all-in figure exists. Figures reported until August 2026 indicated a flat USD 500,000 instead; none of these versions has been published in the Official Gazette.
Will I have to live in Argentina?
The anticipated framework requires no prior or ongoing residence, with a single biometrics visit. That is one of its most distinctive features. It is also the feature the courts have questioned, since naturalisation without residence is what the June 2026 rulings addressed.
Do I have to give up my current citizenship?
No. Argentina permits dual citizenship and requires no renunciation.
Will it make US travel easier?
No. Argentina is not in the US Visa Waiver Programme and Argentine citizens require a visa. Argentina is working to rejoin and signed a statement of intent with the United States in July 2025, but nothing has been granted.
Is there a route that works today?
Yes. Ordinary naturalisation after two years of legal residence, with no investment requirement. It is one of the shortest residence requirements in the world. The trade-off is that two years of residence makes you an Argentine tax resident on worldwide income and assets.
What happens if the Supreme Court upholds the rulings?
The investment route as designed would lose its legal foundation and would need primary legislation from Congress rather than a decree. The ordinary naturalisation route is unaffected — indeed the rulings returned that process to the federal judges.
